North Country Trail collection, ca. 1930-1939, 1960-2007.

This collection documents the life of Peter Wolfe (1915-1990) and his hikes through the North Country Trail from 1974 to 1980. Wolfe worked on his memoir with writer Ruth Alford MacFarlane. She, in turn, donated her research material to the Archives of Michigan. The manuscript was never published. The collection consists of correspondence, magazine articles, maps, brochures, and handwritten materials. There are also meeting minutes and newsletters of the North Country Trail Association and literature of and about other hiking organizations. Most of the audio cassette tapes concern MacFarlane's interviews with Peter Wolfe, providing an oral history of Wolfe's life and hiking experiences.

Peter Henry Wolfe was born October 31, 1915 in Hartford, Connecticut to Lithuanian immigrants, George and Antoinette Wolfe. Peter had two sisters, Helen and Aldona. On January 4, 1934, he married Marie DeSantis, and they had three sons: Robert, Frank and William. A fourth child died in infancy. Eventually they divorced, Peter becoming an alcoholic and a drifter.
